What is IICRC and Why Does it Matter in New Castle, DE?

If you’re a homeowner and a hired a restoration company like SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, chances are you haven’t heard of IICRC even though it has played a very important role in making sure your home loss was taken care of properly.

IICRC, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, is a global non-profit organization that offers certifications and has established the industry standards in the procedures for water, mold, fire, biohazard losses. It also sets the standard for ethics, communication, and proficiency within the industry. Did you know? Many insurance companies require technicians working on insurance losses to hold certifications with IICRC.

While our technicians are educated with multiple platforms of learning, the IICRC certifications hold a high importance in their training. Here are some of the restoration certifications that our technicians are proud to hold:

Water Damage Restoration

Teaches the technician about overall water damage, including its effects and drying techniques for affected structures. Basically, it’s Water Damage 101.

Trauma and Crime Scene

Provides technicians with guidance and understanding of particular types of situations found in biohazard losses “regardless of surface, item, or location.” They are taught to investigate and inspect human blood and other possible material contamination so they can assess and develop a plan to properly clean the scene and dispose of biohazardous material.

Odor Control

Teaches the technicians about odor and olfaction (the capacity to smell), source for odor, theory of odor control, how to detect it, and what type of equipment and/or solutions to use to remediate.  They also learn how to “address odors caused by biological sources such as decomposition, urine contamination, mold, combustion sources such as fire and smoke damage, and chemical sources such as fuel oil spills or volatile organic chemicals.”

Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration

With this certification our technicians are informed of the practices and science around fire and smoke damage that includes “scoping, mitigation, cleaning, deodorization, subrogation, spoliation, and documentation of residential and commercial fire and smoke damaged structures and contents”.

Commercial Drying Specialist

Residential waters can be quite different than commercial water losses, and our crews are knowledgeable in how to inspect and evaluate larger scale losses as well as the best method for effective and efficient drying. This includes “commercial, industrial, institutional, and complex residential water-damaged structures, systems, and furniture, fixtures, and equipment”.

Building Moisture Inspection

Technicians are taught to think critically while assessing materials for potential moisture and how to conduct a proper inspection. Information such as “[t]he principles of psychrometry, basic thermodynamics, using inspection equipment, [...] collecting and interpreting data, as well as documenting the findings in a moisture inspection report” are covered as well.

Applied Structural Drying

More advanced than Water Damage Restoration, technicians are equipped with further methods and techniques to effectively dry both structure and contents.

Applied Microbial Remediation

Technicians are instructed on techniques for remediating mold and sewage losses. Here at SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle we use antimicrobial solutions specifically designed by in our house chemist at headquarters.
