Labor Day weekend is just around the corner, and for many of us, that means firing up the grill for a delicious outdoor feast. As you prepare to celebrate the end of summer with family and friends, it's essential to prioritize safety while enjoying your favorite grilled dishes. Here are some valuable tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable grilling experience this Labor Day weekend, brought to you by SERVPRO of Bear, New Castle:

Inspect Your Grill: Before you start grilling, take a moment to inspect your grill for any signs of wear and tear. Ensure that all the parts are in good condition, the gas lines are secure, and there are no leaks. A well-maintained grill is a safe grill.

Choose the Right Location: Set up your grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, away from structures, overhanging branches, or anything flammable. Keep a safe distance from your home, garage, and other outdoor equipment.

Keep Children and Pets Away: Create a safe zone around the grill and make sure children and pets are aware of it. They should be kept at least three feet away to avoid accidents and burns.

Use Proper Grilling Tools: Invest in high-quality grilling utensils, including long-handled tongs and spatulas, to keep your hands safe from the heat. Avoid using makeshift tools that might not provide the necessary control.

Practice Food Safety: Always marinate and store meat in the refrigerator, not at room temperature. Ensure that meat is cooked to the recommended internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria. Use a food thermometer for accuracy.

Keep a Fire Extinguisher Handy: It's better to be prepared for emergencies. Have a fire extinguisher nearby, and make sure you and your guests know how to use it.

Don't Leave the Grill Unattended: Stay by the grill while cooking, especially if you're grilling with an open flame. Fires can spread quickly, so it's crucial to be vigilant.

Clean Your Grill: After your Labor Day barbecue, take the time to clean your grill thoroughly. Grease buildup can lead to flare-ups and potential accidents.

Properly Store Propane Tanks: If you use a propane grill, store the tank in an upright position, and never store it indoors. Check for any leaks before use.

Enjoy Responsibly: Remember that alcohol and grilling can be a dangerous combination. If you're drinking, do so responsibly, and avoid becoming distracted from your grill duties.

Now that you're armed with these safety tips, you can focus on what really matters this Labor Day weekend—enjoying delicious grilled food and quality time with loved ones. If, despite your best efforts, you encounter any grilling mishaps or emergencies, don't hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Bear, New Castle for professional help. Your safety is our priority, and we're here to assist 24/7.

Here's to a safe, flavorful, and memorable Labor Day weekend!

Cleaning Your Grill: A Crucial Step in Preventing Fires – SERVPRO of Bear, New Castle

9/26/2023 (Permalink)

steak on grill with flames As grilling season comes to an end, SERVPRO of Bear, New Castle is "Here to Help" with any disaster that strikes.

Grilling season is in full swing, and there's nothing quite like the sizzle of burgers or the aroma of barbecue filling the air. But before you fire up that grill for your next cookout, let's talk about a critical aspect of grilling safety: grill maintenance and cleaning. Regularly cleaning your grill not only ensures better-tasting food but also plays a vital role in preventing dangerous fires. Here's why it's crucial and how to do it effectively, brought to you by SERVPRO of Bear, New Castle:

The Importance of Grill Cleaning:

Reducing Fire Risk: Over time, grease and food residue accumulate on the grates, burners, and inside the grill. This buildup becomes a significant fire hazard, as it can ignite during cooking and lead to uncontrolled flames.

Enhancing Food Quality: A dirty grill can impart unpleasant flavors to your food and hinder proper cooking. Cleaning the grill grates ensures that your dishes retain their delicious taste.

Extending Grill Life: Regular cleaning can prolong the life of your grill. Grease and residue can corrode the grill's components, leading to costly repairs or replacements.

Effective Grill Cleaning Steps

Safety First: Before you begin, make sure the grill is cool and disconnected from the gas source (if applicable). Always wear protective gloves and eye protection.

Scrape the Grates: Start by scraping the grill grates with a grill brush or scraper. This removes any loose debris and residue. For stubborn, stuck-on grime, use a grill stone or a ball of aluminum foil.

Remove Grates and Burners: If possible, remove the grates and burners for a thorough cleaning. Scrub them with warm, soapy water and a brush. Rinse and dry thoroughly before reassembling.

Clean the Inside: Wipe down the interior of the grill with a mixture of warm, soapy water. Pay attention to corners and crevices where grease can accumulate. Rinse and dry.

Empty the Drip Tray: The drip tray can collect a significant amount of grease. Empty and clean it regularly to prevent flare-ups.

Check for Gas Leaks: If you have a gas grill, inspect the gas lines and connections for leaks. A soapy water solution can help identify any bubbles forming, indicating a leak. Address any issues immediately.

Regular Maintenance: Make grill cleaning part of your regular routine, either before or after each use. This will prevent grease buildup and potential fire hazards.

Remember that a clean grill is a safe grill. By taking the time to clean and maintain your grill, you not only reduce the risk of fires but also ensure that your outdoor cooking experiences are enjoyable and trouble-free. If you ever need assistance with fire damage cleanup or restoration services, don't hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Bear, New Castle. We're here to help keep your home safe and your grilling adventures worry-free.

Enjoy your grilling season and stay safe!

The Most Common Fire Threats in the Home | SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle

7/28/2023 (Permalink)

Fire and smoke billowing out of the roof of a brick two story home SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is here for your family and business if you have a fire disaster occurs.

House fires are certainly scary experiences no matter how large or destructive they get. Watching your home and possessions go up in flames is not only overwhelming, but it can also create a dangerous situation for you in a matter of minutes. Did you know that over 350,000 homes suffer some degree of fire damage every year in the United States?

House fires can start for all kinds of reasons, but there are definitely some reasons that are more common than others. By learning about the different fire threats around your home, you can help change up some of your lifestyle choices to reduce your risk of experiencing a house fire. Read on as our SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle team explains more!

Kitchen Mishaps

The majority of house fires start somewhere in the kitchen. Since we often use fire or heat to cook our meals, that might seem obvious! Whenever heat, grease or flammable material come together, it can lead to a single spark that grows to a large flame in seconds.

The main fire prevention strategy in the kitchen is to stay in the kitchen whenever you are cooking. Don’t even pop out quickly to grab something in another room. A single second is all it takes for a grease bubble to pop and catch fire.

While you are standing close by monitoring your soon-to-be meal, keep a pot lid nearby just in case you need to quickly extinguish a flame. Remember that grease fires and water do not mix, so having something close by to smother the flames is always a good idea.

Electrical Malfunctions and Cigarettes

Electrical fires are another leading cause of house fire damage. If you have an older home or wiggly outlets, chances are that your electrical work is outdated or worn behind your walls. An outlet could heat up or arc and cause a fire to start at any point. Do your best to address any electrical issues quickly and don’t overload your outlets.

You should be plugging in a single electronic to each outlet, and do not daisy-chain extension cords, which is when you plug one cord into another cord. A single electrical surge could damage any electronics plugged into the affected outlet box and a fire could start that way.

Another common reason for house fires is smoldering cigarettes. Fires caused by cigarette butts can be fatal and lead to devastating consequences and damage. Try to only smoke and dispose of your cigarettes outside in a fire-safe container, and certainly do not smoke while you are in bed or tired. Falling asleep with a lit cigarette anywhere near flammable blankets or bedding could be dangerous to everyone in your house.

Recovering After a Fire

No matter how a fire starts in a home, it can lead to extensive damage before the fire department arrives. After the flames are out and you have been given the all-clear to re-enter your home, pick up the phone and call SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle. We will walk you through the entire restoration process and work hard to ensure every bit of damage is reversed and your home is restored to its pre-fire condition as quickly as possible.

We will clean, sanitize and restore your walls, floors and ceilings, and we won’t stop until every evidence of your fire has been removed from your house. We are here for you 247!

Fires can start in a multitude of ways. Let SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle help you recover faster.

Let Us Restore Your Bear, DE Property with Ultrasonic Cleaning

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Image of an Ultrasonic Cleaning machine with the lid open To Learn More About Ultrasonic Cleaning Call SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, DE (302) 392-6000.

One of the types of services SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is proud to offer is ultrasonic cleaning and contents restoration, which is one of the most efficient and effective ways to restoring your smoke, water, and mold damaged property.

About Ultrasonic Cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning is one of the most effective and efficient way of cleaning contents. The secret is cavitation, which is when millions of microscopic bubbles are repeatedly formed and immediately collapse. This action causes the bubbles to penetrate into every nook and cranny. What’s impressive is that there are no scrubbing or abrasive chemicals!! This process involves submerging items into a pre-wash station, next into the wash station, and then it moves to the third machine seen pictured where they are then rinsed.

About Contents Restoration

Contents restoration is a significant aspect of what we do. It not only does it help to restore damaged property, it helps to restore people’s lives and livelihoods. While property damage can take on many forms, it’s important to homeowners is that their lives are return to normal, and that they get their property back, as fast as possible.

Of course, when property can be returned depends on the type and severity of the damage. Not every item, like those burnt or melted in fire losses, can be restored, but a great number of items that would have typically been determined to be unsalvageable in the past can now be quickly restored and returned to their rightful owner with SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle’s Ultrasonic Cleaning Services.

Benefits of Ultrasonic Cleaning for Contents Restoration

The benefits of restoring property with SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle’s Ultrasonic Cleaning Services:

  1. For Property Owners: Property is restored and returned quickly, whereas traditional cleaning methods can take weeks and cause additional property damage. Most people are happy simply getting their property back, especially if it means getting their lives back to normal as fast as possible and even more so if the items have sentimental value.
  2. For Insurance Companies: The cost of restoring an item versus reimbursing the owner for the item’s full value is dramatically diminished.

Types of Contents Restoration

The damage that occurs to property during fires, floods, and other disasters is often much more severe than it first appears. Fire is destructive and an item that is physically burned or melted cannot be restored. However, property that has been engulfed in smoke, covered in soot, stained or discolored by water or contaminated by chemicals or molds can usually be restored to functional (or even good-as-new) condition with SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle’s Ultrasonic Cleaning Services.

How Common Damage Occurs

Damage to property and personal possessions can occur in many different ways. While damage as described above is common, fires are particularly troublesome as they can often result in multiple forms of damage. For example:

During A Fire:

Fires can produce vast amounts of smoke that leave soot deposits on property. Depending on what has burned and the temperature of the fire, the soot produced by the fire may not only be mixed with a variety of chemicals and toxins. Additionally, physical properties of the soot can range from a fine powder to a thick sludge. Furthermore, because the particulate matter that makes up soot (and the chemical residue) is microscopic, it can not only penetrate deep into tiny crevices on the surface of an item, but it can also “sink” deep into the item itself. This is especially true of electronics which can actually attract soot and dirt because they can generate magnetic fields or become charged with static electricity.

Immediately After A Fire:

The water that was used to extinguish the flames can discolor the surfaces of many types of items. Additionally, water can cause severe physical damage since the materials from which many items are made can actually absorb surprising amounts of water.

Long After A Fire:

Many types of materials and even the items themselves can retain significant levels of moisture. Moisture absorbed by an item that has not been properly dried, or that remains on or near the surface, may quickly become a breeding ground for molds and bacteria or other potentially hazardous residues.

Whether it is from a fire, mold, water, dust or even nicotine, we will do our best to clean your belonging. Below are just a few examples of what can be cleaned with Ultrasonic Cleaning.

  • Window Blinds
  • Electronics
  • Fans (electric)

Lower Your Fire Cleanup Costs After A Fire

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

A bedroom that recently suffered a fire loss, all furniture is burned and smoking SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle prioritizes restoring your structure and belongings over replacement after a loss, saving you both time and money.

A loss due to fire is terrible enough as it is without factoring in how much it can cost to restore the damage done to your home. As is the case with most types of loss, quick and immediate action through emergency mitigation services can save you money in the long run by minimizing further damage to both your structure and belongings.

Saving Fire Damaged Possessions

At first glance after the loss many of your personal belonging affected by the flames and smoke may look like they are beyond repair but in reality, they are often recoverable. Don’t give up too easily on saving your family heirlooms as a fire restoration company like SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is trained to identify when items can be salvaged, and when they aren’t able be to be restored to preloss condition, we will reach out to you on whether you would like to still keep the heirloom/belonging regardless of condition. The most important thing you can do is call us quickly to service your belongings, because certain items in your home like drapes, furniture, carpet, walls, and ceilings can absorb smoke. If too much time elapses between the fire damage and fire cleanup, the effects of smoke damage can last for months or longer.

Time Can Cost You Many Possessions

By not securing a restoration company immediately after your fire loss, the amount of damage to property and structure as well as the cost to service them will increase. Less belongings will be salvageable which means they will need to be replaced which is more costly. Some of the items that decrease the chances of restoration with time include your clothing, leather, photographs, books, furniture, kitchen items, and many other things. However, we do not in any way handle firearms and ammunition

Restored To Pre-Loss Condition

As mentioned before, our goal is getting your damaged belongings to back to their preloss condition as it is usually more affordable to restore items than to replace them. That means you shouldn’t throw anything out until you know for sure that it will need to be replaced. Some of the additional services that are associated with fire loss include boarding up your property for security measures, inventorying all salvageable and unsalvageable items, packing and moving your belonging to our facility for cleaning and storage, and moving back your items when you are ready.

Why Choose SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle?

As a leader in fire and water cleanup and restoration, SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle, our proven system of professionals have sensitively and efficiently handled all sizes and types of losses. Here’s How to Prevent Mold in Your Newark, DE Business

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Cubicle with mold growth on the exterior wall SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle can handle remediation of any size! Our technicians use advanced technology and techniques to treat mold in your business.

The presence of mold is a nightmare for both homeowners and business owners alike. While mold is welcome when it comes to cheese, soy sauce, and other tasty things, it is a major problem when found on belongings or on your structure. According to the EPA, mold can grow on almost any organic substance if moisture and oxygen are present.

SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle has seen mold in all types of commercial properties, from shops to schools to restaurants and many more. Common places mold can be found hiding include wallpaper, paneling, underneath carpets and pads, and on top of ceiling tiles.

Take a look at some of our SERVPRO suggestions on how to keep your commercial property mold free:

Inspect Your Commercial Property for Water Damage

Closely examine every area of your property to see if there are any places that have a lot of moisture. Any water damage should be dried within 48 hours otherwise it’s the perfect recipe for mold.

A Tidy, Dry Business is a Mold Free Business

Make sure that your employees pick up any wet items and avoid leaving wet boots and shoes in places that will absorb the moisture, and also keep both the floors and windows dry at all times, especially during rainy weather.

Airflow Avoids Mold

Good ventilation is an easy way to prevent mold. Having the bathroom and kitchen doors open as much as possible can help by increasing air flow. If you want to use equipment, using a dehumidifier can keep areas dry and pleasant. But be careful; make sure it stays in good operating condition to avoid leakage. Follow the information provided by manufacturer, it will give you direction on how to clean and take care of the unit.

Monitor Moisture

Control the indoor moisture of your property and be careful about what materials are installed. In rooms that have moisture issues do not install carpet, like where there is a water fountain or classroom sink. You can buy a moisture reader from a local hardware store to measure for yourself; the EPA recommends humidity between 30-60%.

Build with Mold Resistant Materials

Look for products that have mold-resistant properties in the materials, such as sheetrock or paint. This will help in the common spaces to have moisture such the kitchen, break room, and bathroom.

Why SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle?

If you have any suspicions of mold on your property, call SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle at 302-392-6000. Our friendly office will schedule a time for our estimator to assess and write up an estimate for services.

Newark DE Homes: How to Minimize Your Chance of Water Damage

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

Sudsy water is overflowing over the sink and onto the kitchen floor. Sometimes water damage in your home is out of your control, which is why SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is a call away at 302-392-6000.

As a homeowner, you can do everything right by taking preventative measures against water damage but things can still go wrong. Appliances with waterlines can have concealed leaks that won’t be noticeable until the damage is done. Pipes can break, toilets can overflow, and water can seep behind your walls and under your floors. Water damage can also occur after a violent storm, a flood, or several days of steady rain and leave you with damage to valuable belongings, your flooring, and structural components. Also be aware if you have a basement or a lower level as they are especially prone to this type of damage.

The Reality of Water Damage Statistics

It's easy to think that water damage or storm damage won't happen to you but statistics say otherwise: 14,000 people in the US experience a water damage emergency at home or work each day, and 98% of basements in the US will suffer from some type of water damage during their lifetime. Water damage is also among the most common causes of property insurance claims. While you cannot stop a storm from happening, you can take these following steps to prevent water damage overall.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Kitchens and bathrooms are susceptible to water damage simply due to the amount of plumbing in these areas. Be sure to fix any leaking or dripping pipes promptly, and be aware of elevated humidity levels that could indicate an underlying plumbing problem. Maintain caulk around showers and bathtubs since water that passes through gaps can penetrate walls and subfloors. If this sealant has cracked or separated, have it repaired. The good news is that you can probably complete that task yourself, but it doesn’t hurt to involve a professional.

Appliances

As previously mentioned, it’s difficult to tell if your appliances are leaking, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk. To start, inspect the waterlines for your appliances at least once per year. If you notice that any hoses are brittle, cracked, or crimped, replace them before they fail. Pay special attention to hoses for washing machines, refrigerators, and ice makers; since washing machines have inlet hoses and drains, they are especially prone to leaks. Also turn off the water supply for all appliances before traveling out of town so there’s no watery surprises when you return home.

Protecting Pipes

Colder weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst. Protect your plumbing from this by insulating pipes that travel along exterior walls or through unheated crawlspaces. On cold nights, open cupboard doors to allow heat that would otherwise be closed off to that area for pipes behind the wall and let your faucets maintain a slow drip to keep the water flowing (double check that the drain isn’t blocked before doing so). Never set the thermostat below 55 degrees in your home either. Before winter, drain all watering hoses, and turn off valves for exterior faucets. If a pipe does freeze, don't thaw it too quickly otherwise you will have a pipe burst on your hands.

If a Water Emergency Does Occur

  • Turn off the water supply immediately, call your utility company if necessary.
  • Use mops and towels to remove as much water as possible; shop vacs work great too.
  • Turn on fans, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners to remove excess moisture.
  • Use wood blocks or tinfoil to elevate or separate furniture from wet surfaces.
  • Remove area rugs, table lamps, and colored items to prevent staining and to help dry the underlying surface.
  • Place wet sofa cushions and upholstered items on end for faster drying.
  • Never use ceiling lights, TVs, or appliances in waterlogged areas.
  • Remove books, magazines, and items that may bleed or stain.
  • Stay out of areas where ceilings are sagging.

By taking preventive measures, you can minimize the likelihood of water damage affecting your home. If you do experience water damage at your home or business, respond quickly and call the professionals at SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle at (302) 392-6000.

Why Choose SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle?

For over 20 years, SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle has specialized in water damage repair and restoration. Our highly trained professionals use state-of-the-art equipment and document every step of the drying process, ensuring the job is done correctly from the initial phone call to the final bill.

Major Storm Coming? Here’s Why You May Want to Evacuate.

3/13/2022 (Permalink)

A line of cars driving in the rain. SERVPRO of Bear/New Castle is here to help out homeowners suffering from minor and major storm damage.

While evacuating your home can be difficult in the face of a major storm, there are often more reasons to evacuate than to stay in place. Flood damage can cause many dangerous and unpredictable consequences if you’re trapped in your home, most of which could be avoided by temporarily evacuating to a safer area. Note that in some scenarios, staying at home may be less risky than seeking refuge elsewhere, especially if water is blocking roadways; a car can be carried away in water as little as 2 feet. However, here are just a few of the risks you can avoid by vacating the area.

Fire Risk

It might be strange to consider that fire can occur in a home suffering from flood loss but it is definitely possible. An electrical fire can start once the water reaches power outlets or electronic devices. Lighting and heat fixtures affected by water could be damaged and set fire nearby materials. In some cases, chemical fires may start as substances both within and from outside the home combine and react negatively. If you are still in your flooded home when a fire starts, it may be difficult to escape.

Rising Water

While some floods come and go quickly through your home, others may leave behind standing water. Getting into direct contact with standing water isn’t safe is it contaminated and could expose you to bacteria, sewage, and chemicals. That means if you live in a single story, it would be impossible to avoid the floodwater where with a two-story structure you can refuge in the upper floor.

Structural Instability

Floods can cause severe damage to the structural integrity of your home, even if it is a single story and of newer construction. Large volumes of water can rapidly disintegrate and even physically tear apart materials in your home, exacerbating existing problems and creating new ones. Particularly disastrous floods can even trap you in your home or cause personal injury. If you do remain in your home, try to stay on high ground and in a structurally stable location.

Are You Covered?

There’s more than just the initial extent of storm damage that homeowners should worry about. If not taken care of properly, water damage from a storm can turn into mold damage quite easily. That’s why it’s important to call a restoration company with years of experience and training to mitigate your home.
