If Your Sump Pump Fails, Your Basement Could Begin to Fill with Water

If you have a basement, that means your sump pump is the last in the line of defense against flooding in your house.  It safely diverts water away from your home and is crucial during times of heavy rainfall that it puts your home at risk of water damage.  You could find your basement under water if your sump pump fails!  Should that happen, it’s vital to act fast! Water damage can be an aggressive issue and if not dealt with properly and in a timely manner, it could lead to problems like structural damage, mold, and much more.

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

  1. Make sure your sump pump is in working order in the first place. Otherwise you are risking the chance that it could fail just when you need it the most.
  2. Every once in a while you should test your sump pump to confirm it is in proper working order. An easy way to test is by filling up the pit with water to see if it is immediately pumped away.  If not, you have a problem on your hands.
  3. Check the float control to make sure it is free and not restricted or hung up.
  4. Always check the sump pump inlet screen for any blockages after heavy rains. Blockage issues are one of the leading causes of sump pump failure.
  5. Replace the battery backup every 2-3 years.  The last thing you need is to find out your battery backup is dead in the middle of a power outage during a big storm.
